Peanut curry with beef is a traditional Mozambican dish that combines intense flavors and creamy textures. It is highly appreciated in the southern regions of the country, such as Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, and represents a fusion between local ingredients and culinary techniques inherited from various cultures.

  • Creamy base made with coconut milk and pounded peanuts

  • Beef slowly cooked until tender and absorbing the aromas of the sauce

  • Aromatic seasoning with onion, tomato, garlic and chili pepper (optional for spiciness)

Ingredients

  • Beef (half a kilo or to taste), cut into pieces

  • Dry raw peanuts (pounded or ground) - about 200 to 500 g

  • Onion - 1 or 2 units, sliced

  • Tomato - fresh or in pulp, 2 medium units

  • Garlic - to taste, finely chopped

  • Salt - to taste

  • Coconut milk - optional, to give more creaminess

  • Hot water - to extract the peanut milk

  • Oil or olive oil - optional, for sautéing

  • Chili pepper or piri-piri - optional, for those who like it spicy

Method

  1. Step 1

    Prepare the peanut milk

    • Place the pounded peanuts in a bowl with hot water.

    • Mix well and strain to extract the peanut milk.

    • Reserve this thick and aromatic liquid.

  2. Step 2

    Cook the beef

    • In a pot, place the beef pieces with salt and chopped onion.

    • Let it cook until the meat is tender and starts to release sauce.

    • Add the chopped tomatoes and a little hot water.

    • Cook for about 30 minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Prepare the sauce

    • In another pot, bring the peanut milk and coconut milk (if using) to heat.

    • Stir well until it starts to boil.

  4. Step 4

    Combine everything

    • Add the cooked beef to the peanut sauce.

    • Add chopped garlic, chili pepper (if you want it spicy) and adjust the salt.

    • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and the flavors integrate.

  5. Step 5

    Finishing

    • The curry will be ready when it is thick and aromatic.

    • Serve with white rice, xima or cassava flour.
