About the venue

The Currency Museum is located in the historic Yellow House, considered the oldest building in Maputo, built in 1860 with Indo-Portuguese architecture. Managed by Eduardo Mondlane University, the museum was inaugurated on June 15, 1981 to celebrate the first anniversary of the creation of the Metical, the Mozambican national currency

  • More than 4300 coins, notes, medals and monetary pieces, including about 1000 related to Mozambique

  • Objects used in direct commercial exchanges before the existence of currency, such as salt, cattle, ivory, fabrics, shells and hoes

  • Exhibition of items such as "M'xudos", "Handas", hoes and "Tésseras", which also had decorative or ritualistic value

  • Maps illustrating the historical trade routes within the country
