Roquinaldo Ferreira and Luiza Reis discuss African studies at Casa do Professor

Roquinaldo Ferreira and Luiza Reis will be in conversation this Thursday (14th), at 5:30 pm, at Casa do Professor, in Maputo. The Brazilian academics will focus on "African studies in Brazil and the United States of America (USA): challenges and connections".

Through their research, Ferreira and Reis discuss academic trajectories in these two contexts, highlighting the intersections between visions and approaches about Africa, their mutual influences and the impact of colonialism and the diaspora.

The discussion offers a unique opportunity to reflect on how the experiences of each country have shaped the production of knowledge about Africa and its global contributions.

Luiza Reis is a professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco, with a PhD in Ethnic and African Studies from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), and president of the Brazilian Association of African Studies (ABE-ÁFRICA) for the period 2025-2026. Her research focuses on the dynamics of the African diaspora and the academic and cultural intersections between Africa and Brazil.

Roquinaldo Ferreira has a PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in African History, with an emphasis on transatlantic connections and African resistance practices. He was previously a professor at the University of Virginia and Brown University.
